Districts are required by Chapter 16 to create Gifted Individualized Educational Plans (Gifted IEPs) that are unique to each student.
Annecdotally, most don't.
Most districts offer their gifted students either pull-out programs fthat meet during certain
times throughout the week or they offer all gifted students in a grade a specific 'gifted curriculum' or course.
This practice, though common, generally does not meet the regulatory requirement.
If your child is gifted and only
offered participation in a gifted pull-out program, and you believe that program alone will not meet their educational needs, you
need to raise that topic at the GIEP meeting. When you do, keep in mind the following:
District Gifted
Programs are not Gifted Individualized Educational Plans
If your district is not willing to have a conversation
that goes beyond its standard gifted programming, and they cannot persuade you that the gifted program meets all of your child's gifted
educational needs, then you must be willing to disapprove the district's proposed Gifted IEP.
