The Present Levels of Educational Performance (PLEP) section is the most important section of the Gifted IEP. It governs
every other facet of the Gifted IEP.
It is critical that the PLEP section give an accurate, objective assessment of your
child's present levels of educational performance. This cannot happen if your child's PLEP section consists of their report card and
their PSSA scores. Unfortunately, most districts do not do proper PLEP testing.
The PLEP section helps the Gifted IEP team
identify Goals, sets expectations throught the Short Term Learning Outcomes, and informs decisions made by the Gifted IEP team about
the child's Specially Designed Instruction. An accurate PLEP section is, quite simply, the entire ball game when it comes to
creating an appropriate, individualized for your gifted child.
This site has a great deal of information on the importance
of PLEP, what constitutes PLEP, and how to advocate for the creation of an appropriate PLEP section. All that's necessary
to understand right now is that a report card, PSSA score, and teacher checklist are not enough to establish PLEP.
You
can reopen the GIEP to determine PLEP levels at any point during the school year. Getting a good PLEP section is the first step
to having an appropriate GIEP. Please review the information on this site or call me at (484) 831-5394 if you have a question.
