Gifted IEPs are required to be reviewed once per year by the GIEP Team. However, the GIEP team may meet at any time to review
or modify the Plan if there is cause to do so. As a parent, and member of the GIEP Team, you may call a meeting if you have
a concern.
The purpose of the GIEP meeting is to create a plan for the gifted student, not discuss a district program.
To create this plan, it's necessary to have an accurate PLEP section in front of the Gifted IEP team at the start of the meeting.
The
regulations require that three functions be present at the table during a Gifted IEP meeting: a parent, a teacher, and someone authorized
to commit resources. Generally, those roles are filled by 1) the parent, 2) the teacher of gifted and 3) a gifted education
supervisor, principal, or pupil services director - referred to as the Local Educational Authority (LEA). The LEA is, generally,
the Gifted IEP Chairperson. At times, the teacher of gifted fulfills both district-based roles.
The first topic that should
be discussed is your child's Present Levels of Educational Performance section. If that section is incomplete, or consists of
only a report card and PSSA scores, then you will need to discuss creating a sufficient PLEP section before moving on to the other
parts of the GIEP.
Parents are equal partners in the GIEP process, in fact, you are asked to approve or disapprove the
district's recommendation. If you have questions or concerns about an upcoming GIEP Meeting, please call me. My number
