Your child is identified as a gifted student - the student has a Gifted IEP - and you believe that your child could be doing
'more'. Parents in this group are reasonably happy with their gifted child's situation. They believe they are familiar enough
with the gifted education 'system' to know if something is really wrong with their child's education. Annecdotally, most parents
fall into this category.
There's a tendency for parents in this group to 'go with the flow'. Their children receive the
district's gifted educational services offered. Generally these services are programmatic in nature and do not offer much,
if any, child-specific individualization. The kids have what I refer to as cookie-cutter Gifted IEPs.
So long as the
gifted child does not develop any significant problems (poor grades, social problems, lack of student skills), the parents remain
satisfied.
The best way to know whether or not you should be satisfied is to take 20 minutes and learn the basics of Pennsylvania's
gifted ed regulations for yourself. There are links to that material at the bottom of this page. Then reread your
child's Gifted IEP.
If you have any questions after doing those two things, then please come back here and learn how
to apply what you have learned to help yourself become more satisfied with your child's gifted education.
